Another Bad Prediction
I can't believe it.
The New England Patriots lost. The team that I had been predicting to go undefeated for most of the season failed me in the end.
Worst, they lost to a team I predicted to finish last in their division. Yup, I thought that between losing Tiki, Tom Coughlin's nagging, and Eli being Eli that the Giants were doomed this season.
Instead they're Super Bowl champs. As for the "Big Game," there's only one thing to blame for the Patriots loss.
Spygate.
Interestingly enough, I wrote in this week's Triangle about how the NFL did a good job of squelching all Spygate talk.
Instead, those chickens came to roost two days before the Super Bowl, with the accusation that New England cheated in their first Super Bowl victory against the Rams.
In case you didn't notice, the Patriots came out flatter than they've ever been and it cost them. They never truly had their swagger for this game, which might be due to distraction. Oh well, now I can go back to hating the Patriots with a passion.

Super Bowl Preview, Sportsology Style
Time for another tale of the tape, Super Bowl XLII edition. This game might be a tad easier to predict than others, as these two teams played an epic match up on the last game of the regular season.
The New England Patriots are on the final leg of their quest to go 19-0, but if you don’t know that then you’ve either been in a coma for a really long time or don’t know how to read. If you have just awaken from your coma, I’m happy for you, although its kind of sad that you chose to come here for your sports news.
Without further ado, here are the match-ups.
New England Passing Game vs New York Giants Passing Defense
The Patriots torched the Giants through the air in their last match-up. However, the recent trend against the Patriots is to double Randy Moss and not give up anything deep. Obviously, this strategy hasn’t worked, but it has sort of slowed New England down. To be quite frank, there’s nothing anybody can do to stop the New England Passing game. However, the Giants do have pass rushing horses to make things a little more difficult.
Advantage: New England
New England Running Game vs New York Giants Rush Defense
A lot of people seem to say that the Patriots weakness is their running game. They obviously don’t pay attention to detail like me. In fact, Maroney (who was lauded as a stud rookie last year) had a better season this year than last.
Look at his stats; in 1 fewer game (but 10 more carries) he had almost 100 more yards than he did last season. The only thing that really holds him back is the shotgun spread, fast break offense New England has employed for most of the season. But when they’ve needed to pound the rock, they know they can rely on Maroney.
Don’t be surprised if the Giants get a heavy dose of Maroney early and often, as they may be expecting another gunslinging game plan.
Advantage: New England
New York Giants Passing Game vs New England Patriots Passing Defense
Sooner or later, Eli Manning has to start playing like Eli Manning. In the biggest game of his life, I expect him to choke in the bright lights down in Phoenix.
Advantage: New England
New York Giants Running Game vs New England Rush Defense
The Patriots only weakness is their run defense. Their linebackers are old and will give up a lot of yards. Oddly enough, their defense seems to get better as the game goes on. Still they pretty much are a bend and sometimes break front seven (in particular the line backers, more specifically Junior Seau and Tedy Bruschi) against the run. If the Giants want to win, or keep it close, they must rely on Brandon Jacobs and company, not Eli Manning.
Advantage: New York
Special Teams
Both teams kicking games worry me.
Advantage: Push
Coaching
There’s no need to even get into this.
Advantage: New England
New England is clearly the better team. With 16-0 on the line in December, they played a decent game. With 19-0 on the line in February, I expect them to play a complete game. The Giants have showed a lot of heart this year, and they have a great foundation to build upon for next year. However, a lot of heart is no match for destiny.

Super Lucky, Super Bad, or Super Improvement?
The NFL isn’t rigged!!!!!!! Imagine how crazy the Green Bay vs. New England match-up would’ve been. America’s QB Brett Favre, in what might be his last season, trying to get another ring while knocking off the hated, cheating New England Patriots and ending their perfect season.
Instead, we get a rematch of the Week 17 classic between the Giants and Pats. However, I’m not so sure the game will be close the second time around.
I say this because of what happened to Green Bay. For 17 games, Brett Favre was on point. He was having one of his best seasons, after being on a decline for the last few seasons.
However, in the 18th game, Brett Favre regressed back into the #4 that played the last 2-3 years.
On the flip side, Eli Manning has morphed from a disaster to a solid game manager. It’s only a matter of time before he has a typical Eli Manning game.
I put my money on this one. Always a guy who’s struggled under pressure, this is the ultimate pressure situation. In addition, you know the Pats are going to be on their A game. Belichick has two weeks to get ready for this game, and their game in the regular season finale is probably fresh in his mind.
These are my thoughts for now, I’ll probably do a tale of the tape closer to game time.

Happy New Year!!!!!!! Uhh Happy Chinese New Year ?!?! Sorry for being lazy ...
17 days later I return from hiatus. I wanted to write a review of 2007, and talk about how I’d be updating the blog more regularly in 2008 … that didn’t happen.
Instead me and one of my frat brothers drank beer and watched every single bowl games that occurred between Jan 1-7, culminating with LSU’s waxing of OSU. I also wanted to gloat about that and Hawaii getting hammered, but you know, that didn’t happen either.
Then I wanted to write about how the NFL playoffs obviously were going to come down to Green Bay/Dallas and New England/Indy, with N.E. ultimately taking down Dallas and finishing the season 19-0. That didn’t happen either.
Well, 2008 Sportsologists, I’m finally here. Sorry for leaving you guys hanging, I’ll try to do better this year (although my predictions will likely remain way off).
NFL
The ultimate match-up is almost among us: Green Bay vs. New England. Brett Favre, a God to some people, versus the greatest QB of all-time Tom Brady. Yea, I said it. He could’ve easily pitched a perfect game against Jacksonville last weekend. Jacksonville is one of the best defenses in the league.
If Favre and his Packers knock of the Patriots, I’d definitely scream conspiracy, especially if he retires after the game.
As far as the Randy Moss thing that came out of nowhere, let’s not pass judgment on him. On Sportscenter last night, they referred to him as a trouble maker for nine years before turning his act around in New England.
I wouldn’t exactly call him that. He was more of a misunderstood character. Running over a traffic cop was a bad move and he’s done other immature things too, although the mooning incident was overblown, considering what the Packers fans do to opponents all the time.
Leonard Little is a troublemaker. PacMan Jones is a trouble attractor, if not a troublemaker. Moss is just a different kind of dude.
As for PacMan Jones, STAY OUT OF THE FREAKING STRIP CLUBS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You do not belong there, every time you go there something bad happens, just stop it. Buy some porn, download some porn, hire strippers to come to your house, hire an escort, go to an Asian massage parlor, subscribe to Cinemax, get in a monogamous relationship, GO TO CHURCH, do whatever you have to do to stay out of the strip clubs. Period.
MLB
Little benefit has come out of releasing names in the Mitchell Report. Roger Clemens is making himself look like a real ass by trying to prove he’s innocent of taking steroids. The proof is in the pudding, enjoy the Barry Bonds treatment.
NBA
STOP SHOWING THE FREAKING MIAMI HEAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Damn, I’m tired of seeing them come on TV. Why did Chicago vs. Miami come on TV, but Portland and Boston didn’t. What kind of sense does that make? If you don’t have flexibility in your TV schedule, ESPN, please bargain for it in your next agreement with the Association. This is absurd.
Guess who’s coming on ESPN tomorrow, by the way … yup, the MIAMI FREAKING HEAT! STOP IT DAVID STERN, PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
College Football
Something has to be done to make coaches honor their contracts. This is getting ridiculous.
Teams to watch for next year (very early): Georgia, Ohio State, Florida, USC, Illinois, Texas.
College Basketball
Grant Wahl’s magic 8 came out yesterday. No complaints here. I haven’t really watched much college basketball this year, unfortunately. I don’t know why I haven’t been into it like I normally am.
Here at Drexel, our men’s team sucks. Our coach is one of those horrible coaches that is overrated for whatever reason. Bruiser Flint is one of those guys that coaches the exact same way regardless of who he has on his team, which is stupid.
Bill Belichick, one of the best coaches in any sport period, has become great by being completely flexible with his schemes, even on a week to week basis.
Sigh. My early favorites are Kansas, UCLA, and Washington State.
Memphis always finds a way to lose in the tourney, and UNC looked suspect against G. Tech last night.
Until next time ....

Bored at Work = Posting like Crazy / AFC Playoff Clarity
The AFC is a lot less confusing than the NFC. Most of the teams are either really good or really bad, opposed to the NFC where everyone is mediocre.
That said, their side of the playoffs should be really competitive (even the New England games), while the NFC is a two horse race.
Without out further ado...
AFC Playoff Definites
New England (11-0) – I still think they’re going undefeated.
Indianapolis (9-2) – The Marvin Harrison injury has proven to be a lot more harmful to them than expected, as Reggie Wayne and his dubious dropped passes are showing that he’s not quite a No.1 receiver.
Pittsburgh (8-3) – Although they have looked shaky as of late, they could win four of their next five and finish with the No. 2 seed in the AFC.
Jacksonville (8-3) – David Garrard has been much better than expected and has saved Jack Del Rio’s job, at least for another season. With games versus Indy and Pittsburgh, they control their own destiny for the No. 2 seed in the conference.
Likely to make the playoffs
Cleveland (7-4) – In a case of things I thought in my head that I should’ve just written on the blog, I thought Derek Anderson was a good enough quarterback all along. No, really. I saw bonus coverage of a Browns/Chiefs games where Anderson was running around, making plays with his arm and his feet. I figured that not only was he better than Charlie Frye, but he was also good enough that Cleveland didn’t have to waste a draft pick on Brady Quinn, who I still think will be a bust.
As for the 2007 Browns led by Anderson, their last five games are very winnable, and they should finish no less than 10-6
Who Knows?
Tennessee – (6-5) – The Madden curse is catching up with Vince and the Titans.
Houston – (5-6) – Houston is one more good draft/free agent period away from being a solid team.
San Diego – (6-5) – Fire Norv Turner!!!!!!! Seriously, to continue to get these jobs, he must be the greatest interviewer of all time.
Denver – (5-6) – That loss to the Bears last week is probably the final nail in the coffin. Speaking of which, check out this Todd Sauerbrun quote about Devin Hester before the game.
Buffalo – (5-6) – They could join the Vikings as one of the worst passing teams to ever make the playoffs.
Final Prediction
1. New England
2. Pittsburgh
3. Indianapolis
4. San Diego
5. Jacksonville
6. Cleveland
At Home – Tennessee, Houston, Denver, Buffalo, New York Jets, Miami Dolphins, Cincinnati Bengals, Baltimore Ravens, Kansas City Chiefs, Oakland Raiders.

Quick Hits 11/16/07
First, I want to say that my prayers are with Sean Taylor and his family right now.
There’s no need to speculate about the situation right now, we should just hope he pulls through.
NFL
As for the rest of the NFL, things are starting to get interesting. The Eagles say they won’t start McNabb until he’s 100%, which is code for “let’s see if A.J. Feely’s game against the Patriots wasn’t a fluke.”
Speaking of the Patriots, their road to 16-0 continues. I will say that their game against the Eagles was more of them taking the foot off the gas, than Philly coming up with a blue print.
Speaking of 16-0 (or 0-16), tonight Ricky Williams makes his triumphant return for the Dolphins. (Insert marijuana joke here).
I’m also looking forward to Dallas making short work of the Packers. However, if Green Bay does knock of the Cowboys, I’ll finally start to take them seriously as a Super Bowl Contender.
Right now, the Super Bowl berths are Dallas and New England’s to lose. Green Bay, Indy, Pittsburgh, may make it interesting, and the Jaguars and Browns are seemingly legit as playoff contenders at least.
Besides the Cowboys and Packers, the rest of the NFC looks like garbage.
Speaking of garbage, I looked at my preseason and fantasy picks over the weekend … horrendous.
NBA
There are a few themes developing early this season in the NBA.
1. LeBron James is here. While many people would’ve wrote this a year or even two years ago, I was always somewhat critical of LeBron, at least in the sense that I didn’t feel like he was the best player in the league or a Jordan reincarnate.
Now, he’s finally living up to those expectations and seems poised to average a triple double for a season some day. I’m now going to watch as many Cavs games as possible.
2. The Suns, Spurs, and Mavs are up to their old tricks again in the West, but the Magic and Celtics are also emerging as power teams. Look for them to be the new Pistons and Heat, as two more of my predictions are made foolish.
3a. The NBA is filled with young and exciting teams. New Orleans, Toronto, Milwaukee, Charlotte, Golden State (kind of), Atlanta, Washington (Caron Butler is the new Carmelo, you heard it here first), the Lakers, Portland are all fun teams to watch.
3b. The NBA hasn’t realized this, and continues to give us the same damn teams on TV. Note to the league, no more Rockets, Heat, Knicks, Nets, Pistons, or Bulls games until further notice. Thanks!
NCAA Football
I’ll save my defending the BCS/making it better rant for later, but I can say that the “overrated teams will lose eventually” theme of college football is constantly proving itself.
If Missouri knocks of Oklahoma this weekend, then I’ll consider them legit. If they lose to Oklahoma, look for West Virginia to destroy Ohio State for the national championship.
Also, expect Hawaii to lose to Washington this weekend, and look the Virginia Tech/BC winner to become overrated.
Georgia is also very overrated and should get shellacked in its bowl game, depending on the match-up.
I’m still mad that Dennis Dixon got hurt and ruined my West Virginia-Oregon dream title game.
NCAA Basketball
Still too early to tell in college basketball, but I can say the CAA is looking strong this season. Even my Drexel Dragons are playing well and my possibly exceed expectations this year.
