For the Lakers, they got Pau Gasol for 1 cent on the dollar. Kwame Brown’s expiring contract, the draft rights to Pau’s little brother, Aaron McKie’s contract, two draft picks (likely to be late 1st rounders), and Javaris Crittenton.
So basically the Grizzlies gave up their franchise player, a 20 and 10 guy, for a rookie combo guard and two draft picks. No wonder Spurs coach Gregg Popovich was so mad.
There’s no question the Griz could’ve gotten a lot more for Gasol than they did. It appears as if they were looking for young players, draft picks and cap room, not current value (like the Bulls or Nets could’ve gave them).
For Memphis, it assumes that someone would want to sign there. I’d say that’s a bad assumption. For the Lakers, they will now have arguably the best starting lineup in the league when Andrew Bynum comes back.
Bynum at the 5, Gasol at the 4, Odom at the 3 (an all 6’10 frontcourt), with Kobe and Derek Fisher in the backcourt. They still have depth too, with Luke Walton, Jordan Farmar, Rony Turiaf, and Trevor Ariza coming off the bench.
In fact, I think they’ll be the favorites to win the west if Bynum and Ariza make it back this year.
Meanwhile, the Phoenix Suns made one of the biggest head-scratching trades of all time. They shipped disgruntled forward Shawn Marion and bench riding backup point guard Marcus Banks to Miami for Shaq.
This is a trade that makes little sense, especially now. Their thinking is Shaq can defend guys like Tim Duncan, Andrew Bynum/Pau Gasol, and other big men in the west that usually torch Amare Stoudamire.
What Suns GM Steve Kerr didn’t realize is that Shaq is not only washed up, but he’s worst on defense than he is on offense.
One mistake people have made about criticizing this trade is saying he’ll mess up their fast break offense. You don’t need five players to run a fast break. He messes them up in the half court.
Now, the Suns half court revolves around Steve Nash running around making plays, pick and rolls, and everyone staying active around the perimeter. The lane is usually clear, giving Nash opportunities to penetrate and get lay-ups or get open shots for other players.
With Shaq, the lane will now be clogged up. Additionally, you can’t really run a pick and roll with Shaq at this point in his career. Also, he’s just as big of a crybaby as Shawn Marion is about not getting touches.
He still draws double teams on occasion, which could open up the perimeter, but they never had a problem opening it up before.
I definitely understand that somebody had to go between Amare and Marion, but that person really was Amare Stoudamire. They had one of their best seasons the year he was injured. Boris Diaw was allowed to start, where he’s best, and he flourished.
The perfect trade would have been Amare for Rasheed Wallace and another bench contributor. Rasheed can play defense and he can shoot the tree, making him the perfect fit for what Phoenix does.
If they were going to deal Marion, deal him for some one better than Shaq. Get multiple talented players, like Andres Nocioni and Tyrus Thomas from Chicago, get Jermaine O’Neal, get Richard Jefferson, get a Pau Gasol.
Instead, they panicked and traded for Shaq. Good luck with that for the next 2 ½ years.

Mike Dunleavy Jr. > Rashard Lewis ???
After watching another bad Miami Heat game last night, I figured it was time for me to address the NBA.
This is probably the 12th time I’ve mentioned it on this blog, but there has to be a good reason why Miami has come on 20 more times than the Boston Celtics. I feel like all of the Heat’s games have been nationally televised this season. It’s really making me sick.
I stumbled across an interesting NBA tidbit the other day and decided to talk about it after Rashard Lewis made that buzzer beater last night.
Did you know that Rashard Lewis is playing no better than Mike Dunleavy, Jr. this year? This fact has to suck for Orlando Magic fans.
Lewis makes about $20 million a year. Dunleavy makes about $9 million a year. Although this is Dunleavy’s best season by far, it can’t make Orlando’s GM feel good that he’s overpaying by about $11 million for Rashard Lewis.

Happy New Year!!!!!!! Uhh Happy Chinese New Year ?!?! Sorry for being lazy ...
17 days later I return from hiatus. I wanted to write a review of 2007, and talk about how I’d be updating the blog more regularly in 2008 … that didn’t happen.
Instead me and one of my frat brothers drank beer and watched every single bowl games that occurred between Jan 1-7, culminating with LSU’s waxing of OSU. I also wanted to gloat about that and Hawaii getting hammered, but you know, that didn’t happen either.
Then I wanted to write about how the NFL playoffs obviously were going to come down to Green Bay/Dallas and New England/Indy, with N.E. ultimately taking down Dallas and finishing the season 19-0. That didn’t happen either.
Well, 2008 Sportsologists, I’m finally here. Sorry for leaving you guys hanging, I’ll try to do better this year (although my predictions will likely remain way off).
NFL
The ultimate match-up is almost among us: Green Bay vs. New England. Brett Favre, a God to some people, versus the greatest QB of all-time Tom Brady. Yea, I said it. He could’ve easily pitched a perfect game against Jacksonville last weekend. Jacksonville is one of the best defenses in the league.
If Favre and his Packers knock of the Patriots, I’d definitely scream conspiracy, especially if he retires after the game.
As far as the Randy Moss thing that came out of nowhere, let’s not pass judgment on him. On Sportscenter last night, they referred to him as a trouble maker for nine years before turning his act around in New England.
I wouldn’t exactly call him that. He was more of a misunderstood character. Running over a traffic cop was a bad move and he’s done other immature things too, although the mooning incident was overblown, considering what the Packers fans do to opponents all the time.
Leonard Little is a troublemaker. PacMan Jones is a trouble attractor, if not a troublemaker. Moss is just a different kind of dude.
As for PacMan Jones, STAY OUT OF THE FREAKING STRIP CLUBS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You do not belong there, every time you go there something bad happens, just stop it. Buy some porn, download some porn, hire strippers to come to your house, hire an escort, go to an Asian massage parlor, subscribe to Cinemax, get in a monogamous relationship, GO TO CHURCH, do whatever you have to do to stay out of the strip clubs. Period.

Little benefit has come out of releasing names in the Mitchell Report. Roger Clemens is making himself look like a real ass by trying to prove he’s innocent of taking steroids. The proof is in the pudding, enjoy the Barry Bonds treatment.

STOP SHOWING THE FREAKING MIAMI HEAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Damn, I’m tired of seeing them come on TV. Why did Chicago vs. Miami come on TV, but Portland and Boston didn’t. What kind of sense does that make? If you don’t have flexibility in your TV schedule, ESPN, please bargain for it in your next agreement with the Association. This is absurd.
Guess who’s coming on ESPN tomorrow, by the way … yup, the MIAMI FREAKING HEAT! STOP IT DAVID STERN, PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
College Football
Something has to be done to make coaches honor their contracts. This is getting ridiculous.
Teams to watch for next year (very early): Georgia, Ohio State, Florida, USC, Illinois, Texas.
College Basketball
Grant Wahl’s magic 8 came out yesterday. No complaints here. I haven’t really watched much college basketball this year, unfortunately. I don’t know why I haven’t been into it like I normally am.
Here at Drexel, our men’s team sucks. Our coach is one of those horrible coaches that is overrated for whatever reason. Bruiser Flint is one of those guys that coaches the exact same way regardless of who he has on his team, which is stupid.
Bill Belichick, one of the best coaches in any sport period, has become great by being completely flexible with his schemes, even on a week to week basis.
Sigh. My early favorites are Kansas, UCLA, and Washington State.
Memphis always finds a way to lose in the tourney, and UNC looked suspect against G. Tech last night.

Mitchell Report Edition of Quick Hits
How could I let such a monumental few days pass without another round of quick hits? I couldn't, of course so enjoy!

The infamous Mitchell Report finally dropped yesterday. But here’s what we all have really been waiting for, the list of names.
The report itself is a casserole of interviews with Kirk Radomski, Brian McNamee, and stuff we already knew. It’s kind of a waste of 400 pages, but it did reveal some things I speculated.
1. Everyone was on the juice. A bum was just as likely to use the juice as an All-Star. A pitcher was just as likely to use drugs as a slugger. A middle reliever was just as likely to use them as a leadoff man. Therefore, if most of the people were juicing then guys like Bonds and Clemens weren’t getting a competitive advantage but staying ahead.
2. Speaking of Clemens, it was sooooo obvious that he was on steroids. His career was just as improbable as Barry Bonds. His name even came up before in steroid speculation, but he was able to deny the allegations and move on. If he had people out to get him, like Bonds, I’m sure that this information would’ve been dug up along time ago.
3. Reactions prove that racism or hatred for Barry Bonds were part of the reason people were so mad in the first place. The writers are getting on TV and posturing like they will hold Clemens up to the same standard as people do Bonds, but I could hear the half-heartedness in their voices. It would be fitting if they both retired or left the game this year, because 5 years from now I can almost guarantee that Clemens will have an easier time getting into the Hall of Fame than Bonds. Regardless of the reasons why, there’s an obvious bias against the guy, down the fact that he was mentioned more times than anyone else in the Mitchell Report, when all the stuff that was said in it was pretty much old news.
All that said, I hope these guys were actually using, because they will now be taunted as cheaters for the rest of their careers. I still say don’t hate the player, hate the game, literally

Mario Williams is making people like me eat their words. I ripped him the shreds as an overrated prospect, a historically stupid #1 overall pick, and an underachiever.
Now, he’s balling harder than Vince Young (Madden Cursed) and Reggie Bush (always overrated).
In fact, he’s already the most prolific pass rusher in Houston Texans history, which is still kind of pathetic.
Still, props are due to Mario, and I’m now on the Mario Williams 4 Pro Bowl bandwagon.
As for the rest of the league, it looks like my NFC picks were dead wrong (again) and the Giants and Vikings have the playoff inside track.
Its all for naught, however, as Dallas is light years ahead of everyone else in the conference and should make it to the Super Bowl rather easily.

Not much to say here, besides STOP SHOWING THE SAME DAMN TEAMS EVERY WEEK!!!!!!
I've still yet to see an entire Celtics game, but I've seen at least 4 Miami Heat games, in which they lost all four, Shaq looked horrible, and their team as a whole looked atrocious.
